Chica is expanding from periods into menopause with our introduction of Chica Chill. Menopause is a taboo subject (even more than periods!), leaving us confused, frustrated, and invisible when we go through it. I sat down with my mom, Mary Kay, to listen to her experience about menopause.
In this interview, I asked my mom:
- What was your first impression of menopause?
- Did you talk to your mom about menopause?
- What has helped you feel better through the transition of menopause?
- If you could speak to your younger self, what advice would you give her about menopause?
- Do you miss your period?
I enjoyed listening to my mom’s perspective on her experience with menopause. Yes, I had an understanding that she had been going through menopause, but I never stopped to ask her, “How are you feeling?” It turns out, the disappearance of her hormones led to her feeling tired and depressed, but since we avoid talking about menopause, she struggled to pretend like everything was fine.
The invisibility of menopause is why we encourage you to have more conversations about menopause with your community. Plus, if you’re talking to your mom, you will be learning about what your own menopause will look like. We invite you to share the same discussion with your mom, grandma, aunt, older sister, or friend!
